Speaker placement can affect how your music, podcast or movie sounds overall. So, when placing your speaker set, you'll need to consider a few different impacting factors, such as room size, speaker quality and the listener's position. Read on to see the top tips for placement and things to keep in mind.

Furniture and object

Ideally when placing your speakers, there should be a clear route for the sound to travel between the speaker and the intended listener. Any large soft objects that are directly in the way of this sound pathway will absorb, block or bounce the sound around which will affect the final audio to listeners.

The golden triangle

For the best sound, position your speakers in a triangle shape to align with the location of where the listener will be. This ensures the sound is coming towards the listener. If possible, you should also try to turn your speakers inwards to face the top point of your triangle. This will really help to encapsulate the sound.

Surrounding walls

For optimum playback, it's best to try and keep the front and sides of your speakers away from surrounding walls. If it really can't be helped though, you should aim to try and keep them 1-3 feet away from walls. Walls can have the ability to bounce sound back or even absorb it, which will affect the way in which the media playing sounds overall.

Height

While speakers should always be placed with the listener's final position in mind, there's one element to this recipe that usually gets missed off; the height of the listener. Placing a speaker on a high table-top is fine, however if the listener is sat down beneath the pathway of sound, it won't provide the best listening experience. For the best listening, the speaker should always be aimed the same height of the listener and their location.

If you can't achieve the desired height for your speakers, you may want to invest in some speaker stands, or see if you're able to mount your speakers to a wall.
